The winner of the Mülheim Water Award 2012

In 2012, the international jury decided in favour of a project from Switzerland, which has been carried out by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kinzelbach from the ‘Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich’ (ETH), a Swiss Technical University.

The project was titled “real-time control of a well field with a groundwater model” and the objective was to secure the quality of the raw water at the waterworks Hardhof (Zürich), which is affected by contaminated groundwater. The price was given to Kinzelbach and his team (ETH, the water supplier of Zürich, TK Consult AG, research centre Jülich), because this was the first-time use of a full-scale application of a groundwater model, connected with measurements of parameters like groundwater height, temperature and electrical conductivity controlled by a real-time model.
